TOURISM
1)
Barrancas of Burujón;
one of the most beautiful, shocking and surprising spots in Toledo
province. They are spectacular clay precipitius formed by wind erosion
and the river Tagus over millions of years. All these earth's riches
can be apreciate through an Ecological Path, which has several
viewpoints to contemplate this amazing place.
2)
Torrijos;
as a trace of its illustrious past, there are three interesting
monuments: "La Colegiata" (16th century),
a church builted by Teresa Enríquez,
Lady-in-waiting of
Queen Isabel "the Catholic" and a superb example of platersque
architecture; the Palace of King Pedro I "the Cruel" (14th century),
now restored as Town Hall; and the Chapel of the Blood Christ, with
great devotion in the area.
3)
La Puebla de Montalbán;
birthplace of Fernando de Rojas, author of La Celestina, it has one of
the most important historical monuments of the Spanish 16th century. It
stands out for the Main Square.
Also it is interesting a visit to the Palace
of Montalbán
and the Celestina Museum.
4)
Montalbán Castle; in
its origins it was muslim, but afterwards it became part of a line of
fortresses call to defend the river Tagus. The castle was donated by
King Alfonso VIII in 1179 to the Jerusalem Temple Order,
well-known as the Templarian Knights. It is located over an spectacular
cliff of the river Torcón and yet has
several magnificent towers.
5)
Chapel de Melque;
the church of Saint Mary of Melque was a monastic monument
built
in the 8th century. Undoubtedly, it is best preserved visgotic temple
in the whole Iberian peninsula
6) Maqueda
Castle; it
was a muslim castle, but then restored by Gutierre de
Cárdenas in the 15th century. You may see his shield in the
main
entrance. It is known that the Queen Isabel "the Catholic" lived in it.
Nowadays it has become the barracks of the Guardia Civil and
it is
planned to establish a museum about this military corps.
7)
Malpica Castle;
built over an old arab fortress, King Juan II of Castilla lived here in
1420 during his runaway. It is protected by a moat and the river Tagus,
forming a beautiful spot. It is the best preserved castle of Toledo
province.
8)
Wine Tourism;
Toledo has a great wine tradition. You may visit several important
wineries such as Finca Constancia (Gonzalez Byass), Osborne
Malpica,
Dominio de Valdepusa, Capilla del Fraile, Arrayán,
Jiménez Landi or Finca Loranque.
