History and Origins of the Estate | La Salve Hotel & Spa

A place with history: from family estate to a haven of calm in Toledo

La Salve: history and calm in Toledo

The hotel stands on land with a long tradition in Torrijos, known since ancient times as La Salve. Although today it is a space of serenity and nature, in the 16th century it was home to the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, located outside the city walls to ensure a safe and isolated environment for its patients.

In 1947, Arturo López Rodríguez acquired this arid, agricultural estate with the intention of creating a weekend retreat. A businessman based in Madrid and owner of the fine lingerie brand Zaid, he soon decided to expand the initial project and turn the property into a full agricultural and livestock operation. Over the years, new facilities were added —a poultry farm, pigsties, stables, warehouses and a dovecote— giving life to a prosperous and constantly growing estate. The main chalet was completed in 1950, as recalled by the sundial that still presides over one of its walls.

Gardens and family legacy in Toledo.

Don Arturo’s great passions, gardening and books, remain present today. The gardens preserve much of their original design, and many of the species planted decades ago continue to flourish. The former family library, carefully preserved, has been transformed into an elegant multimedia room ideal for corporate meetings, maintaining its charm for lovers of reading.

In the 1970s, the house was remodelled to welcome his daughter Marichele and her husband, Dr. Gregorio Sánchez de Rivera. Today, now converted into a hotel, the estate remains in the family’s hands: it is Don Arturo’s grandchildren who continue his legacy, transforming this historic space into an intimate, peaceful and welcoming retreat, perfect for couples and private events.
